Poggi Wines is a family-owned, extremely small production Napa Valley vineyard and winery with a singular focus on Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines and vineyard site expression. We craft two distinct Cabernet Sauvignon wines –a Bordeaux style blend from our estate vineyard consisting of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon made from Diamond Mountain fruit. Both are single-vineyard wines. Annual production is 150 to 200 cases.
Our Napa Valley estate vineyard is located in Calistoga and was planted in 1997. Its potential for producing high quality cabernet fruit was well-established by neighboring vineyards, including the iconic Eisele Vineyard. Similarly, our sourced vineyard on Diamond Mountain has a long-standing history of producing some of the most coveted Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
Winemaking is classic and simple. Each vintage we strive to craft complex, well-balanced wines that are age-worthy but drink well in their youth and reflect their distinct vineyards.
The first commercial vintage of Poggi Wines (2014) was released in 2016.
The Poggi name on every bottle is our promise of the highest quality and value.

We own approximately 140 acres of prime Valley-floor vineyards including the Leonardini Vineyard in St. Helena and are committed to making the finest Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Reserve wine. In 1993, the Leonardini Family of San Francisco took control of the Whitehall Lane estate. They updated the winemaking, instituted a new barrel-aging program and continued sourcing the finest vineyards.
Bordeaux immigrant Jean Laurent came to California in 1852 to seek gold but instead founded one of the first wineries in Napa Valley. Laurent built his first winery in 1874, which was a modest wooden structure. Business was good and in 1879 he built the stone cellar that is the heart of the present-day winery. Laurent was one of the largest producers in the California wine boom of the 1880s. In those days, wines were sold in bulk and shipped by train to the east coast. After Laurent’s death in 1890, the winery continued operating under a succession of owners.
Bruce Markham arrived in Napa Valley almost 100 years later, also looking to start a winery.
He purchased vineyards in Yountville, Oak Knoll and Calistoga and the old Laurent winery, which was operating as a cooperative at the time. In 1978, he founded Markham Vineyards and the old Laurent winery was reborn. Markham focused on Cabernet Sauvignon in its early days and introduced the Markham Merlot with the 1980 vintage. From 1978 to 1988 the winery's production increased from 3,500 cases to 20,000 cases. The wine quality and praise from wine critics and consumers increased as well.
In 1988, the old Laurent Winery once again rose like a phoenix to take on another new life. The winery was sold to Mercian Corporation and began an ambitious four-year, multi-million dollar renovation, expansion and vineyard-replanting program. These efforts would more than double the capacity and make Markham one of the most advanced, stunning winemaking facilities in the country. Even through the dust of the renovation, Markham was able to produce three of the number-one rated wines from California, as judged by Wine Spectator magazine.

Burgess Cellars has been family owned and creating wines with mountain distinction since 1972 on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. When our founder Tom Burgess purchased an 1870's era vineyard and winery in 1972, he established himself as a pioneer of mountainside wineries. At the time, there were only approximately two dozen wineries in operation in the whole Napa Valley and he saw the potential of mountain vineyards to produce wines that evoke the French concept of terrior: that the grapes, and thus wines, should reflect the vineyard's soil, exposure, and overall micro-climate.
Today, the second generation is building on Tom's legacy. Brothers Steven Burgess and James Burgess took over as President and Vineyard Manager respectively. In 2013, Winemaker Kelly Woods, a UC Davis graduate, completed the new team, and together the trio has fine-tuned the vineyards and cellar to highlight mountain grapes.
The new direction of the estate is taking Burgess Cellars to the pinnacle of Napa Valley wine quality. At almost 1000 feet, far over the valley floor, we produce wines from our two estate hillside vineyards, Winery Ranch Vineyard and Haymaker Vineyard. Our hillside grapes tend to be smaller, with more concentrated flavors and tannins, varietal intensity and excellent aging properties.
A visit to Burgess Cellars begins with a panoramic vista that offers real perspective on the Napa Valley. One can see the length of the Mayacamas range, from Calistoga to the hills beyond Napa. We present our wines in our cellar, where you are surrounded by barrels.
